February 2006

Here are a few simple steps in PSP V8 using a Mask.
Though this tutorial was created using Paint Shop Pro 8
it should be adaptable to other versions.

Don't have Paint Shop Pro? Get a trial version here...Corel
Version 8 is no longer available. Version XI (11) has been released.
You may still be able to buy other versions at Amazon

To create this image you will also need the following:

My Gradient < Right click and select 'Save Target As'. unzip it to its own folder.
Enter the folder and select all and copy and paste into your gradient folder under
My Documents.

My Gradients are in psp8 format and named lhdarkbrowns & lhcreamy.

Here we go...

1. Create a new image: transparent, raster, 16mill.24 bit  color.
400x400 pixels 72dpi/ppi.

2. Save image as maskfun1.pspimage

3. Set your background to a lhdarkbrowns gradient,
and set your foreground to a lhcreamy gradient.

4. Fill Raster 1 Layer with the background gradient.

5.Create a new layer.

6. Fill Raster 2 with the foreground gradient.

7. Click on the save icon to save your image.

8. On the Menu select Layers> Load/Save Mask> Load Mask from
disc.

9. Select a mask from the drop down list. I selected Cubes.
Click ok. See what the mask does? kewl, eh~

10. Click on the save icon to save your image.

You should now have 4 layers in the Layer Palette: Group,
Mask & Raster 2, and Raster 1.

11. Click on the Group Layer, Right click and select
Merge Group. ***See below before proceeding with this step.

Now this group layer can be treated just like any other
object on a layer.

Depending on the type of mask you selected, you can also
choose to invert it in the Mask options to get the opposite
results of the above.
You can texture it, color it, etc. Some you can add drop
shadows too. My Savanna image contains some trees and
eagles.
These were once masks that i filled, textured and used them
in my image.
Kewl, eh!
