Simple Grunge Tag Tutorial

Here are a few simple steps in PSP V8 used to create a Grunge Type Tag.
Though this tutorial was created using Paint Shop Pro 8
it should be adaptable to other versions.

To create this image you will also need the following:

1. An image you want in the tag.

2. Right click this link and select 'Open in New Window'
JenR's In·X·plicable Design - Grunge Texture Brushes for Paint Shop Pro 7
Click on the Grunge Texture image found near the bottom on the right,
to download.

After you download, virus scan the file, unzip it to its own folder....
In PSP versions higher then 7, select File> Import> Custom Brush.
In the Custom Brush Window click 'Open', then browse to the folder
you unzipped.

Click on jenr_grungetextures.jbr & click 'open'.
All included brushes will load in the left pane.
Click on 'add all'. When done, Click Ok.
The brush cache will be updated and then close.
Click on your paint brush tool and then the display window arrow to see
your newly added brushes.

Okay, so lets have some fun.

Layer One: Black
01. create a new image: input the info in the approprate areas:
400x150 pixels,
72 dpi/ppi,
16 million 24 bit, 
Raster Layer,
Transparent.

02. rename raster layer 1, black

03. set your foreground to White & your background to Black

04. fill the layer with Black

05. >>>select 'Save As' and save your image as grungetag1.psp image.

Layer Two: Grunge 5
06. select Layer>New Raster Layer and rename it grunge5

07. expand your grungetag1 image so it covers your work space.

08. click on your paint brush tool

09. click on the brush display windows arrow & select the
      jenr_grungetexture005 from the list
      (move your mouse over the brushes to get the name displayed.)

10. either use the default settings for the brush or set the opacity
     to 50, hardness to 50

11. place the grunge brush over the image and align it to the bottom
    left hand corner, then click once.

12. move the brush over and align it next to the previous one and
     click again.

13. move the brush up half way (half your brush will be off the image,
    and repeat steps 11 & 12.

14. move your brush to the centre left edge of your image
    (the brush will be a bit off at the top and bottom), and click.

15. move it over to centre right edge and click

16. >>>click the saved icon to save the image.

Layer Three: Grunge 7
17. select Layer>New Raster Layer and rename it grunge7

18. click on the view window arrow & select the jenr_grungetexture007
    from the list.

19. use the settings already set for the brush.

20. place the brush over the centre of the image and click 5 times in
     the same spot.

21. >>>click the saved icon to save the image.

Layer Four: Image
22. open the image you want in your tag. Mine is the lady.

23. copy the image then close it.

24. click on your grunge image.

25. go up to edit>Paste>Paste as a new layer and rename the
      layer 'image'.

26. if needed go up to Image>resize and resize only that layer.

27. if needed select crop tool and draw out to all sizes,
      then double click.

28. if needed go up to Adjust>Sharpness>Sharp.
      If needed it do it 2 times.

29. >>>click the saved icon to save the image.

Layer Five: Motion 1
30. duplicate the image layer

31. right click the layer and select arrange> move down.

32. rename it motion1

33. select Adjust>Blur>Motion Blur with these settings: Angle 45,
Strength 90, click ok.

34. >>>click the saved icon to save the image.

Layer 6: Motion Blur (Duplicate & Merge)
35. Dulpicate Layer Five Motion 1 Layer several times to complete step 36.
     (depends on size of image) for use in creating the background.

36. click on the move tool or deform tool and move each of the
      copied layers over beside each other in either direction
      until they completely cover the background.

37.. >>>click the saved icon to save the image.

38. toggle off (close) (X) the following layers: image, grunge5,
     grunge7, & black

39. click on any of the Duplicate Layers, if you are not on one already,
     Place your cursor over the Layer Palette, right click and select Merge>Visible
     from the drop down menu.

40. Rename Layer 6 to Motion Blur

Layer 7: Motion Blur 2
40. duplicate Layer 6: Motion Blur twice.

41. toggle off (close) (X) Layer 6: Motion Blur

42. place your cursor over the Layer Palette, and with one of the duplicate layers
      selected, right click and select Merge>Visible from the drop down menu.

43. select Adjust>Blur>Motion Blur with these settings: Angle 45,
      Strength 90, click ok.

44. rename this layer motionblur2.

45. >>>click the saved icon to save the image.

Next Steps
46. toggle on (open) (remove the X) from these layers only: image, grunge5,
grunge7, & black.

47. Still on the motionblur2 layer, place your cursor over the Motionblur 2
      Layer in the Layer Palette, right click it and select properties.

55. from the Blend Mode drop down list select 'overlay'

56. >>>go up to File>Save As> and save your image as grungetag1b.psp
image ( add the letter b)

***
57. toggle off (X) the image layer

58. still on the motionblur layer, right click and select
     Merge>Merge Visible

59. >>>go up to File>Save As> and save your image as grungetag1c.psp
      image ( add the letter c)

***
60. duplicate this visible layer, now called Merged.

61. right click the copy of merged and select properties.

62. from the Blend Mode drop down list select soft light.

63. rename the layer softlite

64. >>>go up to File>Save As> and save your image as grungetag1d.psp
     image ( add the letter d)

65. click on our image layer and Toggle it on (remove the X)

66. go up to Layers> Masks> Load mask, and select Conte, Settings:
      Fit to Canvas, Source luminance, hide all mask, no check in invert,
      click ok.

67. right click on the mask layer and select Merge>Merge Group.
     the layer name has changed to Group image

68. >>>go up to File>Save As> and save your image as grungetag1e.psp
     image ( add the letter e)

Now lets add some scanlines

69. click on the softlite layer

70. go up to Effects>Artistic>Halftone & select scanlines from the
     preset menu at the top. Click ok.

71. >>>go up to File>Save As> and save your image as grungetag1f.psp
     image ( add the letter f)

Now lets add a border.

72. click on the Group image layer (top layer)

73. go up to Layer>New Raster Layer

74. click on the Selection tool and draw out your boarder
     edge to edge (approx. 10x 10y to 380x 140y)

75. fill with white

76. go up to Effects>3d>Artistic>Halftone and still with the Scan lines
     selected change the following : Colour Scheme to Greyscale,
     Screen angle 1 to 60, click ok.

77. right click the border layer and select properties or move the
     opacity slider down to 20, click ok

78. go up to Selection>Select None

79. >>>go up to File>Save As> and save your image as grungetag1g.psp
     image ( add the letter g)

Now lets add our name in text.

80. create a new layer above the border layer.
      Layer>New Raster Layer

81. click on the text tool and select these settings
     Text: Create as Vector, Font Arial Black, Size 72,Stroke 0,
     Anti-alias checked, alignment centred, Line style Solid, 10 mitre limit,
     Auto kern checked leading 0

82. set your background colour to white.

83. click on the centre of the image and in the pop up window,
     type in your name. Click ok.

84. move the text where you want it. Mine went to the left.

85. go up to Layer>Convert to Raster

86. right click the border layer and select properties move the
     Opacity slider down to 30

87. go up to File>Save As> and save your image as grungetag1gt.psp
      image (add the letter t to the g)

Now lets save it as an uncompressed Jpg.

88. go up to Layers>Merge>Merge Flatten

89. go up to File>Save As> and save your image as grungetag1gm.psp
      image ( add the letter m to the g)

90. go up to File>Save As> and select jpg from the drop down menu.

91. click on the options tab and in the pop up window set
     the compression slider to 1.
     Click ok. Click save.

And you're done.
